Neophyte invasions in European grasslands

چکیده
Questions The human-related spread of alien plants has serious environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Therefore, it is important to know which habitats are most threatened by invasion why. We studied a wide range European grasslands assess: (a) species the successful invaders in grasslands; (b) how levels differ across regions (countries or their parts) biogeographical regions; (c) habitat types invaded. Location Europe. Methods selected 97,411 grassland vegetation plots from Vegetation Archive (EVA) assigned native status each 8,212 vascular plant found these plots. considered only neophytes (alien introduced after 1500 AD), we further divided according origin. compared using relative neophyte richness pool, cover per plot, percentages invaded among habitats. Results Only 536 species, representing 6.5% all were classified as neophytes. These mostly therophytes hemicryptophytes with low specificity. Most them present very few plots, while three recorded more than 1% (Onobrychis viciifolia, Erigeron annuus canadensis). Although generally low, Boreal Continental regions. When considering non-European neophytes, Pannonian region was Among different habitats, sandy invaded, alpine oromediterranean least Conclusions In general, natural semi-natural have relatively invasions human-made alluvial forests, well on other continents. typical invading broad ecological niches.

Soil phosphorus constrains biodiversity across European grasslands.
Nutrient pollution presents a serious threat to biodiversity conservation. In terrestrial ecosystems, the deleterious effects of nitrogen pollution are increasingly understood and several mitigating environmental policies have been developed. Compared to nitrogen, the effects of increased phosphorus have received far less attention, although some studies have indicated that phosphorus pollution...
متن کاملPlant invasions differentially affected by diversity and dominant species in native‐ and exotic‐dominated grasslands
Plant invasions are an increasingly serious global concern, especially as the climate changes. Here, we explored how plant invasions differed between native- and novel exotic-dominated grasslands with experimental addition of summer precipitation in Texas in 2009. Exotic species greened up earlier than natives by an average of 18 days. This was associated with a lower invasion rate early in the...
متن کاملInvasive Plants and Wildlife Habitat Effects of Plant Invasions on Wildlife in Desert Grasslands
Like all grasslands across North America, the distribution of desert grasslands has been reduced markedly, and remnants have been altered extensively by humans. In Arizona, NewMexico, Texas, USA, and in Mexico, desert grasslands have been invaded by dozens of non-native plants, especially perennial grasses that evolved in arid systems with similar climate and disturbance regimes. In desert gras...
متن کاملGateways to alien invasions in the European seas
The spatial pattern of initial introductions of marine alien species in the European Seas (including the entire Mediterranean) was investigated. Marked geographic patterns depending on the pathway of introduction were revealed, with specific countries acting as gateways to alien invasions. France and Italy were the countries mostly responsible for introductions by aquaculture, while Lessepsian ...
متن کاملChanges in light and nitrogen availability under pioneer trees may indirectly facilitate tree invasions of grasslands
1 The first trees establishing in grasslands may indirectly favour their seedlings in competition with neighbouring herbaceous vegetation by increasing soil fertility with nitrogen-rich litter and by reducing light levels under their canopies. It is predicted that increasing soil nitrogen availability will accelerate invasion of trees by stimulating their growth more than that of herbaceous spe...
